Multimedia Applications
Semi-professional (Revision3, Blip.tv) and user generated (Youtube, Dailymotion, Flickr) content that has become popular in the last few years has been available only on the PC until recently. However, with the advent of Over-the-Top (OTT) set-top-boxes (Roku, Popbox, Boxee, Sezmi, ZillionTV), Internet connected game consoles (Wii, PS3, Xbox), and Internet enabled TVs (LG HDTV, Sony Bravia) & Blue-Ray players (Panasonic, Philips, Samsung), web content can be streamed over the Internet and can be watched in the comfort of the living room TV. Many of these hardware vendors have opened their platforms for developers to develop third-party applications/channels to bring any type of multimedia content to living room TVs. Furthermore, even branded content owners (Hollywood movie studios, ABC, NBC, CBS, etc) are looking to diversify their distribution beyond cable and satellite operators. Services such as Netflix and Amazon have become very popular in distributing branded content through various Internet devices.
